Synephrine
The continuous rise in the prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome has made weight loss-related active ingredients with both safety and clear efficacy receive dual attention from the clinical and consumer markets. Synephrine is a natural alkaloid belonging to the adrenergic receptor agonist category. It mainly promotes metabolism, increases thermogenesis and inhibits fat accumulation by binding to α-adrenergic receptors, while having a weak effect on cardiac β-receptors, with lower side effects compared with traditional weight loss ingredients. At present, it is not only used as an adjuvant preparation for weight management in overweight people, but also applied in respiratory system-related preparations to relieve bronchospasm symptoms, and has a wide range of application scenarios in the pharmaceutical and large health fields.
The global synephrine market size had exceeded 180 million US dollars in 2023, with a compound annual growth rate of around 7.2% in the past five years. The growth driver mainly comes from the rapid rise in demand for weight management products. At present, the supply side of the market is dominated by plant-derived sources. China is the world's largest producer and exporter of synephrine, with production capacity accounting for more than 75% of the global total. Leading manufacturers are concentrated in Hunan, Sichuan and other regions. The price shows seasonal changes affected by the fluctuation of the yield of Aurantii Fructus Immaturus raw materials, and the supplier certification threshold for downstream preparation enterprises is gradually increasing along with stricter regulation.
As an active ingredient of natural origin, synephrine has no chemical new drug application record from a single original research enterprise. At present, many countries list it as a dietary supplement or active pharmaceutical ingredient for management. In China, 12 synephrine active pharmaceutical ingredients have obtained A-status registration on the CDE API Registration Platform, which can be directly associated with preparation applications. Oral preparations of various dosage forms have been approved for marketing, and the relevant reference standards are included in the 2025 edition of Chinese Pharmacopoeia. (Data as of June 2025, please refer to the official CDE website for the latest information)
