Kanamycin/Bekanamycin
In the clinical treatment of Gram-negative bacterial infections, aminoglycoside antibiotics have always been an important medication option, and kanamycin is a classic representative of this category. It binds to the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes to block the entire process of bacterial protein synthesis, and has strong antibacterial activity against a variety of Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Proteus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, etc. Clinically, it is mainly used for respiratory tract infections, biliary tract infections, urinary tract infections, sepsis, etc. caused by susceptible bacteria. It can also be used as a second-line anti-tuberculosis drug for the combined treatment of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, and the applicable population covers adults and pediatric patients without medication contraindications.
The current global kanamycin market size is approximately USD 320 million, with a compound annual growth rate maintained at around 2.1%. The growth drivers mainly come from the increase in the demand for diagnosis and treatment of primary infectious diseases and the stable demand for antibacterial drugs in the animal husbandry and aquaculture industry. In the domestic market, kanamycin is a mature generic drug variety, and the selected price in centralized procurement has decreased by more than 85% compared with the original research product. At present, the domestic production of active pharmaceutical ingredients is dominated by local enterprises, with production capacity accounting for about 72% of the total global supply, and the competitive landscape is relatively stable.
The original research enterprise of kanamycin is Pfizer Inc. of the United States, with the original research trade name Kantrex, and the core compound patent expired globally in 1986. The main dosage forms approved for the original research product include injections (500mg/2mL, 1g/4mL), oral capsules (250mg) and eye drops (0.5%), among which kanamycin for injection has been included in both the *Catalogue of Chemical Reference Preparations* of China and the FDA reference preparation catalogue. At present, the kanamycin active pharmaceutical ingredients of 12 domestic enterprises have obtained A status through CDE registration, and the approved preparation varieties cover multiple dosage forms such as injections, oral preparations and eye drops. (Data as of June 2025, please refer to the official CDE website for the latest information)
