Carprofen

Musculoskeletal diseases are chronic conditions with high clinical incidence in pets. Pain and inflammatory responses not only reduce the mobility of canines, but also significantly affect their quality of life. Carprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, which blocks the synthesis of prostaglandins by selectively inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), while exerting little effect on COX-1 involved in gastric mucosal protection. While exerting potent anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic effects, its risk of gastrointestinal adverse reactions is significantly lower than that of traditional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. At present, this drug is mainly used to relieve pain and inflammation related to canine osteoarthritis, and can also be used for analgesic treatment before and after canine surgery, making it one of the most widely used anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs in global pet clinical practice.

The global market size of carprofen for pets exceeded USD 320 million in 2023, with a compound annual growth rate of 7.8% in the past 5 years. The growth momentum mainly comes from the increase in global pet ownership and the upgrading of companion animal medical consumption. The current market pattern is characterized by original research products occupying the high-end market, and generic drugs gradually sinking with cost advantages: the penetration rate of pet generic drugs in Europe and the United States has reached 42%, while the domestic market is still in the early stage of development, with less than 10 approved carprofen preparation products, and the supply and demand gap is relatively significant.

The original research enterprise of carprofen is Pfizer, with the original research trade name "Rimadyl". Its core compound patent expired globally in 2008, and the preparation patent in China also expired in 2010. The main dosage forms approved for the original research include chewable tablets (25mg, 75mg, 100mg) and injections (50mg/ml), which have been included in the FDA Reference Listed Drug Catalog, and also included in the *Chinese Veterinary Pharmacopoeia* 2020 edition. Up to now, the veterinary drug database of the National Medical Products Administration of China shows that 8 enterprises have obtained approval for the production of carprofen active pharmaceutical ingredients, and a total of 12 valid API registration numbers can be queried on the CDE veterinary drug registration platform. A number of domestic enterprises have obtained approval for the marketing of carprofen tablets, injections and other preparations.
