Campesterol

Dyslipidemia is one of the core inducing factors of cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. With the property of similar structure to cholesterol, phytosterols have become important functional ingredients in the field of blood lipid intervention. Campesterol, a naturally occurring phytosterol, can competitively inhibit the esterification and dissociation of cholesterol in the intestinal tract and reduce the absorption efficiency of cholesterol in the intestinal tract, while helping to lower the level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. It can be used as an active pharmaceutical ingredient to prepare hypolipidemic related compound preparations, as a pharmaceutical excipient for the preparation of liposomes and transdermal drug delivery systems, and is also widely added to food for special medical purposes, which is suitable for daily intervention of people with high blood lipid and primary prevention of people at high risk of cardiovascular diseases.

At present, the global market size of phytosterol raw materials has exceeded 4.5 billion RMB, with a compound annual growth rate of around 7.2%. Among them, campesterol, which has dual properties of medicinal and edible use, has seen its market demand share increase year by year to 16%. The current domestic market presents a pattern where imported and domestic raw materials coexist. High-purity medicinal grade campesterol has long been dependent on imports. With the iteration of domestic extraction and purification processes, the purity of domestic raw materials has reached more than 99%, gradually realizing the replacement of imported products, and the cost is 20%-30% lower than that of imports. At present, a number of enterprises have submitted registration applications for medicinal grade campesterol, and the market supply side is expanding rapidly.

Campesterol is a natural active substance with no original research enterprise for the single compound, and related preparation products are mostly compound preparations or phytosterol composite products. As of October 2024, there have been 5 registration entries of campesterol on the CDE API registration platform, among which 2 are in status A and can be used as legal APIs for associated preparation declaration; a number of domestic lipid-lowering compound preparations and pharmaceutical excipient products containing campesterol have been approved for marketing.
