Apramycin

Aminoglycoside antibiotics are the core category of drugs for the prevention and control of bacterial infections in livestock and poultry. As a representative animal-specific variety in this category, apramycin specifically binds to the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes and blocks the extension of peptide chains during protein synthesis. It has strong bactericidal activity against Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella, and Pasteurella, while the incidence of drug resistance is significantly lower than that of traditional drugs of the same category. It is mainly used clinically to prevent and treat bacterial intestinal infections in pigs and chickens, and can also be used as a growth-promoting additive in livestock and poultry breeding. It is currently the priority recommended antibacterial drug variety for the livestock and poultry breeding industry.

The global market size of veterinary apramycin was approximately USD 210 million in 2023, and the compound annual growth rate is expected to remain at 4.2% from 2024 to 2030. The growth momentum mainly comes from the increase in the penetration rate of large-scale farming and the rising demand for safe and effective antibacterial drugs under the antibiotic ban policy. In the domestic market, domestic generic drugs account for more than 90% of the market share, with Shandong, Hebei, and Jiangsu as the core main production areas. As the scope of centralized procurement of veterinary drugs gradually expands, the market share of enterprises with cost advantages and compliant production capacity will further increase.

The original research enterprise of apramycin is Eli Lilly and Company (US), and the original brand name is "Apralan". The core compound patent expired globally in 2001. The main dosage forms of the original product are soluble powder and injection, and common specifications include 100g:10g and 100ml:10g. This variety has been included in the *Veterinary Drug Quality Standards* of China and the FDA Reference Listed Drugs for Animal Use Catalog. As of the retrieval time, more than 30 domestic enterprises have obtained approval for apramycin API through the veterinary drug registration of CDE, and more than 50 corresponding preparation varieties have been approved for marketing. (Data as of June 2025, please refer to the official website of CDE for the latest information)
