Flumetasone

Glucocorticoids are one of the core categories for clinical anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive therapy. As a medium-potency fluorinated glucocorticoid, flumethasone binds to intracellular glucocorticoid receptors to inhibit the release of inflammatory factors and the activation of immune cells, with strong anti-inflammatory effect and weak side effect of water and sodium retention. Its external preparations are mainly used for the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, localized neurodermatitis, nummular eczema, lichen planus and other inflammatory skin diseases, and can also assist in the treatment of non-infectious ocular inflammation. The applicable population covers adult and pediatric patients with skin inflammation.

The global market size of topical glucocorticoids was approximately USD 18.7 billion in 2024. With balanced potency and safety, flumethasone accounts for about 3.2% of the medium-potency glucocorticoid category, with a compound growth rate of 4.1% in the past five years, which is higher than the industry average. In terms of the domestic market, flumethasone preparations account for about 2.6% of glucocorticoid medications used in the dermatology department of public hospitals. They have been included in the third batch of national centralized drug procurement, and the winning price has dropped by about 75% compared with that before the centralized procurement, with an obvious volume expansion trend, and the demand for upstream API has increased rapidly accordingly.

The original research and development enterprise of flumethasone is Merck Sharp & Dohme, with the original brand name "Flucort". The core compound patent expired globally in 1984. At present, the originally developed dosage form approved in China is mainly 0.02% flumethasone cream, which has been included in the *Reference Listed Drug Catalogue of Chemical Drugs* issued by the National Medical Products Administration. As of the retrieval time, there is no publicly announced A status registration number of flumethasone on the CDE API registration platform, and domestically marketed preparations mainly rely on imported API supply. (Data as of June 2025, please refer to the official CDE website for the latest information)
